Lots of Arrows/Alternate Bow/Melee - always best to be prepared.better to have leftovers than run out during a horde! Crafting lots of Arrows also increases Weapon Smithing skill which is uber useful.

They are more mid/late game as their full upgrade is Steel (after upgrading through the 2 Scrap Iron stages). Wood Log Spikes are good too.but expensive on upgrades. Wood Spikes - very helpful early game defense. There is no "best" way, even though people will argue otherwise ) As corny as it sounds, you're only limited by your imagination ) And there is nothing stopping you from trying any/all of these things. Some people don't even build bases, just play as a nomad. Some fight zeds out in the open, even using Cacti to their advantage in Desert or Plains Biome. Some build their "home" and build an alternate base for horde nights specifically (also ensures your Bedroll and Storages can be placed away from the chaos). Prefab building or starting from scratch. Part of the awesomeness of this game is its mulitude of options and playstyles. boring (never tried.but I could imagine!) However, if building/playing this way increases your enjoyment of the game.have at 'er! Your entertainment is really all that matters. :) Treading water all night in a deep lake until morning is another game exploit. I have tried a couple of playthroughs like this but found it rather boring. You'll encounter other tougher zombies like the Ferals, Spider Zombies( climbs wall) Cops(vomits corrosive projectiles and explodes), Screamers( cries out to attract more zombies) and etc. The first 7th day horde is manageable with decent defense, but as myschyef mentioned they will scale up in difficulty as the weeks pass by. The sky will also be red as it is a "blood moon".
The zombies will not stop spawning in until the day chime. Depending on your character level the horde scales up with tougher zombies to fight, some of which you may not see otherwise like the feral. Feral means they automatically know where you are and head straight for you no matter what. As I stated you should be able to jump over it should any get across the moat of spikes and lure them across to the otherside where more spikes are waiting. Now mind you they will go World War Z on you and climb over each other and others corpses so you need to be vigilant (the spikes continue to work even with a corpse under their feet). This is just wide enough you can jump it (if you haven't broken your leg, so make sure there are some 2 block wide areas just in case) but they can't While digging it though make sure you make some ramps out occasionally (wandering hoards will sneak up on you), just not toward the inside where you intend to sit it out that kind of defeats the point. My favorite thing to do is dig a moat around my house about 2-3 blocks wide and 4 or so blocks deep and line the entire bottom with spikes (the ones that require 100 wood). But they will dig, so make sure you're deep enough. Make a tunnel and if you are deep enough they can't dig through to you easily. You gotta dig deep and through the ground. Down doesn't cut it as they will just drop into the hole on top of you. Find yourself a good spot, lots of materials to repair mining tools with and start digging.
